6th October 2006 We are not Amused

If the Queen looked over her reading glasses from the first floor of Buckingham Palace and down The Mall, she would NOT be amused if she saw her immaculate red asphalt littered with ugly beige-coloured anti-skid patches, burnt-off old traffic signs, large cracks along its entire length and, to crown it all, huge holes being dug to accommodate a new water mains system.
Our Party is concerned about the sad state of our Lord Street’s disfigured red asphalt which is, in fact, suffering quite badly from the above problems. Consequently we were forced, at the recent October Southport Area Committee meeting, to remind the town’s councillors about this deterioration of our main street. Fortunately our comments were quickly recognised by most of the councillors at the meeting and The Southport Party’s views on the matter appeared to be welcome.
Consequently their favourable response was that, after all the disruptive work is completed by the middle of next year, there will be a collective endeavour to have our beautiful red asphalt surface along our famous street restored to its former glory.
Unfortunately, the downturn of the evening contained a pathetic excuse by Sefton Council officials that the ugly beige anti-skid patches could NOT be done in matching red because that might clash with the bus lane markings currently in use. This, quite rightly, went down like a lead balloon with most people at the meeting.

With a multi-million pound Lord Street refurbishment plan now being discussed, our Party members feel that, like the Queen, an immaculate road surface is necessary for good tourism along such a famous thoroughfare.
