Finding out from BBC Television that Southport’s nearly 100 year old Pleasureland has unexpectedly closed down, was a great shock to most residents and, in particular, the more than 50 permanent staff and the many casual workers who went to work to find that their jobs had disappeared. This sudden decision has prompted our Party to ask the following questions:
- Did the Council receive any warning?
- Was anyone aware of a change in the company’s policy so soon after the sad demise of their 2 most senior directors?
- What are the full terms and conditions that the administration renegotiated with the company regarding the 150 years Pleasureland lease on 24th October 2003?
- What input do the Scarisbrick Estates have regarding their possession of the covenant dated 29th September 1885 (et al) plus their influence on the current site?
- Numerous townsfolk have contacted us after reading that chainsaws are ‘even as we speak’ attacking and apparently demolishing the historic wooden cyclone and they, together with our Party, are demanding an explanation.
- Are the go-carts along with the inverted ‘bungee jump’ still going to operate as they appear to be outside the Pleasureland boundary?
- Will careful Health and Safety rules and site security still be rigorously enforced to stop any wanton vandalism?
- Are the Council in contact with any other leisure companies to ensure the continuation of this long-established attraction?
- Finally, with at least half of the Pleasureland site consisting of car and coach parks, will they still be available for resident and visitor use?
