| In a determination to preserve Southport’s threatened tourist beaches, our Party, in conjunction with the local Beach Protection Group, would like to let residents see for themselves what can be done with proper beach management.
The 2 attached photographs show a before and after situation, depicting firstly the existing appearance of part of our beach in its muddy state, just 100 yards from the beach award flag, fluttering embarrassingly on the sea wall, and, secondly, a computer enhanced photo, showing an attractive clean covering of sand that could be placed on top, thus making it an inviting stretch of visitor shoreline.
Not many families, with their bucket and spade children, are encouraged to sit and play on this muddy beach, but, if it were covered in clean sand at the start of each summer season, as now seen, it would solve this ugly problem and provide a much more inviting play area.
Why the current beach management haven’t already tackled this year-in and year-out mess, quite frankly, astounds us. But perhaps this administration is too busy in Crosby looking after the rusting gormless Gormley iron statues with an estimated £30,000 of additional money lavished upon them, by the supposed hard-up Sefton Council, an amount which could double by the time these statues are finally removed in 2007.
Whatever the reason, Southport, as the major resort in the borough, deserves to be properly prepared for its new tourist season and comfortable in the fact that we are living up to our historical claim of having large stretches of golden sands to offer our visitors.
A clean appearance and good nearby facilities are a basic requirement of any classic resort, a fact that appears to be a stranger in the minds of certain administrators.
