| With France and Holland having just sent a card and flowers to the EU, as they celebrate their deliverance from any further descent into the quagmire of monolithic European bureaucracy, the residents of this town may like to take stock of the local comparison.
Sefton Council is, in our opinion, a microcosm of the European Union, with its inefficient, costly and bloated administration dominating the lives of everyone in Southport. Indeed, even our estimated 4 million annual visitors, upon their visit to the town, have to suffer the inadequacy of no decent public toilets.
The dictates that come from the current council cabinet system have been already condemned by a senior veteran Councillor, who is on record as saying that it interferes with traditional debate and true democracy. Certainly the voting results currently coming from the continent indicates that millions of people wish to call a halt to the myriad of railroading changes inflicted upon them by the legions of unelected bureaucrats who have long since stopped listening to the needs and complaints of the majority.
For decades, by stealth, and, we are sad to say, public apathy, the erosion of our democracy has continued. Brick by political brick it has been taken apart before our eyes with even the British electoral system being tinkered with and now, consequently, needing a massive reform to protect it against further abuse.
Perhaps the time is now right for local residents to show their own disapproval of an administration that is currently trying to reduce us to ‘NORTH SEFTON’. We are becoming simply the northern end of their entrenched coastal power base, where unelected bureaucrats keep telling us what they dictate is best for us. The members of the EU are called MEP’s - do we have a local version called the ‘COSY SEFTONITES’?
