| 25th February 2005 | 1970's AQUADOME IDEA LIVES ON. |
One of our party members proposed as early as 1971, well before the creation of Sefton Council, that an Aquadome should be built on Southport 's seafront. 34 years later we see that the new Aquadome, intended to be built on Ocean Plaza just north of Southport pier, may now be relocated next to the Dunes Leisure Centre opposite Pleasureland. This sounds to our party like a very good idea. We must consider the fact that the existing brownfield Plaza site looks rather cramped. The shared parking facilities are already being extensively used by the customers of the numerous retail outlets including McDonalds and Pizza Hut. But the existing Dunes site has not only its very own car parking on either side of the complex but also an adjacent empty site located on its landward side. The existing swimming pool and its leisure centre could be coupled to this new tropically themed Aquadome, opened the year round and containing many additional water features such as flume slides, rapids, a wave machine and Jacuzzis, all to be enjoyed in a pleasant temperature of 84ºF. A multi purpose heating system, using the latest and most efficient technology, combined with interchangeable staffing procedures, would make good economic sense, allowing the running of a dual complex which then becomes a much more viable and attractive proposition to any would-be operator. If this idea is found to be practical, The Southport Party fully endorses the change of location and looks forward to seeing the building of this futuristic structure enhancing our skyline. We also believe it would be a great contribution to the resort's ever increasing tourist attractions as our town ventures further into this new and exciting millennium. |
