| 24th September 2004 | Proposed Closure of Southport Schools. |
The Southport Party are watching with interest the campaigns being conducted by both the Conservative Councillors in Ainsdale and our Liberal Democrat MP in Birkdale. We are surprised at the responses by the Council officers who cannot consistently state the exact reasons for these closures. On one hand they claim that the amalgamation of the 2 Ainsdale schools is feasible then, late in the day, they announce that mobile classrooms will have to be used. The Birkdale situation is that this is a church school and the final decision on closure rests with the church authorities. Now that the Unions are adding their weight, will ALL 21 of the Southport Councillors be listening to the wishes of the majority of the Southport people affected by these changes? Is it possible that the majority of these Councillors will not have the opportunity to vote in any decisions made by the undemocratic Cabinet system used to the advantage of the Council officers in Sefton Council? Be assured that The Southport Party fully supports the work being put in by all the campaigners against these closures. |
